What can Effective Communication do for me?

Everyone including me is practical in life. Thus, this leads us to the question, what can effective communication do for me?

That would be the number one question that most people would be pondering about, and the answer is simple; it helps us to convey our thoughts to others accurately. Being able to be understood by others can help to avoid conflict and misunderstanding amongst family members, friends and colleagues. In addition, it can also help to improve and foster closer relationships.

The importance of effective communication is actually relevant to our daily life. We require it almost every minute and every day. An example would be my usage within my conversations amongst my peers. I have to convey my thoughts and emotions in such a way where they can understand my ideas; these can range from discussing a physics problem to even plan for a gathering.

A personal example would definitely involve my academic needs at the present moment. Presentation skill is an essential skill in university level, where I have to present my ideas or theories across to the lecturers or my peers. Hence, if I can be equipped with the correct techniques to an effective communication, I am able to do well for my studies, and in the future, for my career as well.

Writing of blog posts and giving an oral presentation for my ES2007s module are some of the tasks given to me in this semester to build up my effective communication skills and teamwork. I hope to make use of these opportunities to learn to present my thoughts and ideas accurately across, so that I can have the ability to be successful when I enter the workforce!

  1. Hello Lynette!

Indeed, that is the question that I asked myself when I decided to register for this course (apart from the fact that my friend strongly recommended this course to me).

Personally, I do see this course as an opportunity to throw myself out of my own comfort zone and force myself to talk and write more than I usually do. I guess being in content based course like Physics actually provides pretty little chance for us to polish our oral and written communication skills, after all most of the times we are dealing with equations after equations.

Let's make the most of the weekly sessions then! =)

  2. Hi Lynette,

You have good points on what effective communication can do for you. Let's change the perspective a little, and ask, "what can effective communication in you do for the people around you?"

Becoming an effective communicator, you will be able to bring your message across to other people with such clarity, that people will appreciate having you around. Being an effective communicator, your peers and family members will enjoy spending time with you because you listen actively.

There is so much more that can be listed down, but my point is that when you communicate effectively, its not only to your benefit, but to those around you. When the people around you benefit, it eventually benefits you again. This is what I call a "lovely cycle". Exciting to know that we are going to be equipped more and more with the skills we need as the weeks go by.

  3. Hello Lynette,
I guess u raised some pretty good points. I too, have pondered upon the purpose of 'bidding' for the class. Like you, I have noticed the importance of being able to convey the right ideas to the intended recipient. Communication skills, such as presentation skills, will become increasingly important, as can be seen when we start dealing with projects in the later years of our university life and even more so in the workforce. I believe we will gain more insight about effective communication through this course, so let's look forward to it =)

  4. Hey guys, thanks for commenting on my post :) I can see that most of us agree that effective communication is essential in our lives and we all hope to gain this skill from this module.

However, I hope to emphasize that when we are going through this course, we should try not to focus too much on the information taught to us. I must admit that I am a person who will forget what I have learnt from the previous modules that I took in the previous semester. Hence, I feel that, there is a chance I may forget the lessons I am about to learn during this course, but, I can be confident that, I will definitely become a confident and outspoken person after this course. Effective communication will only works if a person is willing to speak and get involved with the people around, so being a confident and outspoken person is making a huge improvement. That is my goal for attending this module, what is yours?

  5. As to Jun Xiong's post, I really like his comment :) I feel that he has made a great point about how I can use effective communication to benefit others which in turn will benefit me. That is really a lovely cycle, thanks for mentioning that point, it makes me look at the importance of effective communication in another angle. I definitely hope that I can use effective communication in such ways in the time to come.

  6. Hi lynette!

Yes, we need to communicate almost every single minute and everyday of our lives! From the simplest idea of suggesting a place to have lunch to the complex idea of explaining a physics theory, communication is used to share the ideas and thought. However, it is unfortunate that many people (including myself) have limited effective communication to formal settings only such as presentations or dialogue with a respectable person. In an informal setting, we tend to not put in effort to be an effective communicator. We choose the comfort and efficiency over effectiveness of communication. Hence I agree with you that we choose to always convey our thoughts accurately, conflict and misunderstanding can be avoided and ultimately improve relationships.

Also, like what Dayang mentioned, there needs to be a determination to break out of our comfort zones and force ourselves to practice effective communication. If we do not make it a point to practice in this safe environment, it is quite unlikely we’ll ever effective communicators in every aspect of our lives beyond the formal settings.

So let us put in effort for every single session! And make good use of this module!

  7. Hi Lynette, thanks for your fine effort in this post. Your post is easy to read, clear, concise and well-focused. Good job!

In your reply, you mentioned that you are not a person with a strong memory. Well, you can be sure that you are not alone. For many of us, the moment learning ends, forgetting begins almost immediately.

One way in overcoming this is to be motivated. If we are interested in the materials that we are going to learn, we have greater incentive to remember it.

Search deep within yourself, and find out why you want to become an effective communicator. It is not a coincidence why you are writing on the very topic now.

I look forward to your next blog post!
